NEW
GREENHOUSE!!!

The
Allotment Group has managed to work miracles in the
last year; the most recent success being the addition
of a greenhouse to our plot. Here are photos to document
the dismantling, removal and reassembly of the greenhouse
onsite. The greenhouse was a donation and needed to
be removed from a private garden.

NEW
SEASON, NEW LIFE...
Things
are looking great down at the allotment this year!
The group has more people than ever before and alot
has been done over the last several months. Tadpoles
are growing happily in the freshly dug pond, seedlings
are being planted out and the shed is now comfortably
full of earthy tools and pots. The plot has been reorganised
to provide a nice central path and a communal social
area has been decided on. New beds radiate off the
path on both sides and our members meet regularly
for digging and organising sessions. There's even
been talk of a greenhouse and organised social events
in the future... there's no doubt that things are
looking up for Summer 2005.

NEW MEMBERS AND A BEAUTIFUL SHED!
That's
right! Thanks to the efforts of Chris Kavanagh, the
Allotment group has recruited some keen new members
and successfully put up a new shed! If you'd like
to join us, get in touch. Email Jenny (jennyrid@ntlworld.com)
or Chris (christine.kavanagh@ntlworld.com) if you'd
like to be involved.

THE
BRIGHT ALLOTMENT GROUP IS STILL EAGER TO FIND NEW
MEMBERS, A SHED AND A STRIMMER ON LOAN!
We're
not doing too badly, considering that it's our first
season and our group is still very small... Some of
the allotment has been cultivated and we've just put
in a special new bed of flowers by the entrance, but
we still need enthusiastic new members to help dig,
plant and keep weeds, grass and nettles at bay! The
tomatoes, lettuces and beans are looking nice now
but the weeds are still growing like mad (despite
being cut back last month). We are therefore
still eager to borrow a petrol or cordless strimmer
(in exchange for Brights; let Jenny
know if you can help!). We also need to find a shed
or greenhouse for the allotment (we have nowhere to
put our tools yet). If you know of anyone who might
like to donate their shed, please contact Jenny. Allotment
volunteers would be willing to dismantle and remove
your shed for you. The shed in the photo below belongs
to our neighbors.

JULY 2004
We've
been harvesting our first modest (but tasty) crops...
lambs lettuce, rocket, radishes, strawberries, carrots
and spinich! Not bad considering that the soil hasn't
been dug in 8 years and wasn't manured or fertilized
at all! This autumn we're hoping to prepare the soil
properly for next year. Jenny and Chris are taking
an allotment gardening course at Stanmer Park to learn
how...

DIGGING,
PLANTING, WATERING and WEEDING
started in earnest this month... hard work, but good
fun.
The apple tree blossomed, strawberries were planted...

SEEDY
SUNDAY was
an ideal event for the group to make contact with
serious gardeners and gather information. We all left
with plenty of leaflets/books and pockets full of
exotic seeds to grow in our future plots.

A
HUMBLE
BEGINNING... apparently noone
has dug this plot for over eight years (according
to someone with an allotment resembling Mr. McGregor's
garden in Peter Rabbit).

ALLOTMENT
ALLOCATED !
The allotment group was given
a very pleasant plot at the Weald Allotments, just
off Old Shoreham Road in Hove. It's only the beginning
but there are already big plans for a pond and several
vegetable patches, although there's plenty of digging
to be done.

What
will we find? (Jan 04)

Soon
to become a pond...
